About Rare Surfs Carolina Beach, NC — July 17, 2026

In 2019, Waves for Change collaborated with Ocean Cure to host this inaugural surf therapy event for families faced with a diagnosis of a rare disease. We worked with Global Genes to promote the event and to support families in this journey. With years of experience supporting surf therapy events for various populations, we are excited to work with our partners and sponsors to create a day for our Rare Surfers. For 2026, we have two events planned where Carolina Beach will be the first event on Friday, July 17th. Global Genes, Cure Duchenne and Live Fearlessly Foundation are supporting our event with their patient advocacy network and Scout will once again work with families on logistics to ensure everyone has what they need to participate. You do not need to have experience with surfing or the ocean to participate as our team is experienced taking individuals of all abilities out in the water with adaptive equipment. We are excited to facilitate this beach day for families dealing with challenges from a loved one with a rare disease. Please register below and we will provide additional information to get you prepared for this Rare Surf experience.

Rare Surfs – Friday, July 17th
Setup and Volunteers Check in – 8:00 AM
Surfer/Participant Check in – 8:30 AM
Opening Remarks – 8:45 AM
Surf – 9 – Noon
Lunch/Social at the beach – 12:30 PM
Ocean Cure and Waves for Change will have tents up on the beach directly off the boardwalk.
